Following our acquisition of Sansa, we thought you’d like to hear directly from our Founder and CEO, Erick Calderon (aka Snowfro) about what inspired the decision and how that would affect the future of Art Blocks. Below, he shares his vision for our evolving path in the world of generative art.

Q: When did you first discover Sansa and why did you initially decide to partner with them?

A: I discovered Sansa when they first came out as a marketplace custom tailored to Art Blocks works. I remember being super excited about the fact that folks were building on top of what we were working on, demonstrating that a vibrant community of builders as well as art and web3 enthusiasts were rallying around the artists and artworks that were coming out of the minter. The beauty of this technology is the interoperability of the components. In addition to that, I so appreciated the initiative from Jack and Matt to jump in and build a platform in a way that is creator and art focused. They didn’t go the more common route of reaching out and trying to partner, they just got it done.

Q: What caused you to consider the acquisition of Sansa?

A: I have been wanting to see Art Blocks lean into the breadth of what has been released on the platform for a long time. I see us bringing everything together in one place as a way to celebrate all of the incredible innovation that has happened across our ecosystem and community. Establishing this home for generative art and content is our vision, and we are set to further our progress towards this goal with Sansa. They have built a powerful art and creator forward environment to present a variety of our Engine partners and all of the beautiful releases on Art Blocks. Building in web3 is hard, and seeing a nimble team be able to build something so aligned with what I am excited about felt like a no brainer in exploring the opportunity to work together. Never thought it would actually come together, but here we are, and I’m incredibly proud of our teams uniting to make this happen.

Q: Now that Sansa has been acquired, how will it be integrated with Art Blocks?

A: The acquisition of Sansa opens up a tremendous amount of opportunity for Art Blocks as an ecosystem. I have a dream of bringing everything created on our tech under a single roof, and continuing to host the best generative artists and creators within. Every project that has been released on our technology from our flagship platform (curated, presents, playground, factory, collaborations, explorations) to any Art Blocks Engine release will now exist within an integrated marketplace with discoverability inside the Art Blocks ecosystem. You’ll see features we’ve come to love from the Sansa team, in addition to exciting new ones on our roadmap.

Q: How do you see Art Blocks evolving in the future?

A: Art Blocks in and of itself is an evolution in the way we create, distribute and collect digital art, and that evolution has been developing concurrently with the evolution of the blockchain powered digital art space. Things change fast and it’s hard to know what the future holds, but we are very eager and excited to, in the short term, increase optionality and inclusivity within the Art Blocks ecosystem. We’ve built a battle hardened smart contract and minting/rendering infrastructure that we are incredibly proud of, and are really excited to see that put to use in more ways than what’s currently available to creators. So we’re going to broaden the ways that creators can release within the Art Blocks ecosystem as well as bring collector’s collections home to a more cohesive experience. Longer term, we would like to be stewards of the generative medium, hosting the best generative art and content out there. We were born out of a pure passion for the generative medium, and we will continue to build out towards the best possible creator and collector experience we can think of, with a bright future for individual expression in mind.
